EORI ID_Code
The Economic Operators' Registration and Identification (EORI) code is a registration and
identification code used by the customs authorities of the European Union to monitor goods entering or
leaving the EU. The EORI code is assigned to every economic operator, such as businesses, that intends
to conduct commercial transactions with countries outside the European Union. This code enables customs
authorities to verify the identity of the economic operator and monitor import and export activities.
The EORI code consists of a unique European-level identification code, containing both the country code of
the economic operator and a unique identification number assigned by the customs authorities of the country
where the economic operator is registered. In general, private consumer operators do not need an EORI code.
The EORI code is only necessary for economic operators engaging in commercial transactions with countries
outside the European Union, such as importing or exporting goods.
If you are a private consumer purchasing products for personal use from a country outside the European Union,
you generally do not need an EORI code. However, there might be some exceptions where an EORI code is
required, such as when purchasing high-value goods or goods for commercial use. Italian couriers shipping
groupages outside the EU require the seller to provide the buyer with an EORI code.
The reason couriers request the EORI code from buyers residing in the United Kingdom (UK) is related to
Brexit and the new customs regulations that came into effect on January 1, 2021. With Brexit, the UK became
a third country relative to the European Union, meaning that goods entering or leaving the UK must undergo
customs checks and may be subject to customs duties.
For this reason, couriers transporting goods between the UK and other countries require their customers
in the UK, including private consumers, to have an EORI code. This allows customs authorities to uniquely
identify the economic operator and control goods entering or leaving the UK.
If you purchase products from a country outside the UK and want the courier to deliver them to the UK,
the courier may ask you to provide your EORI code to ensure a smooth and proper shipment.
In the United Kingdom, the EORI code can be requested through the website of the British government, specifically on the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy website at this link . On this website, it is possible to access the section Apply for an EORI number that starts with GB, where it is possible to fill out an online form to request the EORI code as individual. In just a few steps, you can easily obtain the EORI number and make direct purchases from our site.
